Come and join representatives from Bryn Mawr College, Rosemont College, Villanova University, and PHENND who will share personal stories, high school & college student perceptions, and best practices with tutoring and mentoring high school students in the School District of Philadelphia. Through our connected work with the state-mandated "Senior Project," a graduation requirement for high school seniors, past and current college mentors will share their personal experiences as well as highlight practical help with initiating open and natural conversations between college students and high school students.
Poverty Beyond the Numbers-- Trang Pham, Brian Ritterpusch, Katie McCabe, Sarah Matsui, Ashley Gunn (LIFT Philadelphia)
The poverty level in Philadelphia has been recorded at 24.1%. However, what does this number really tell us about the realities of poverty for individuals? Join LIFT-Philadelphia volunteers in an interactive workshop that will not only explore these realities but also discuss how poverty is defined. LIFT is growing movement to combat poverty and expand opportunity to all people in the United States. LIFT-Philadelphia operates two offices in the area and has volunteers from Temple, Messiah-Philadelphia, Drexel, Penn and St. Joe's.
ENVIRONMENT--PowerMinders
PowerMinders is a growing network of college students working to reduce energy consumption in their surrounding communities. They are doing everything from giving away energy saving light-bulbs in low-income areas to being trained on highly sophisticated home energy surveys and beyond. This workshop will focus on the benefits of energy efficiency, conservation and how students can positively impact their homes, communities and environment with positive action."
PUBLIC HEALTH-- Candance Robertson, MPH, Research Manager, Women's Health Education Program, Drexel University College of Medicine.
Candance Robertson is the Research Manager at the Women's Health Education Program in the Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM). In this workshop, Ms. Robertson will share challenges and successes of urban public health programming based on her research experience focused on the epidemiology of adolescent violence in urban centers, cultural competence, barriers to the inclusion of minorities in research and a DES education awareness program. She will also discuss the Philadelphia Ujima Project, a new community-based public health initiative at DUCOM.
Acting Up: Action Plan Development--Cho Kim, University of Pennsylvania, SSP '09
Organizers and leaders of civic engagement often face issues and challenges that require well-developed plans and problem-solving approaches. Action planning allows organizers to focus their purpose and goals, as well as produce written plans and documentation that can be used to persuade others, garner resources, and move forward. This workshop guides participants through a series of brainstorming techniques, idea formations, and written exercises to facilitate development of individual action plans.

Incorporating Service Work into your Resume—Stephanie Smith (Widener University)
Stephanie Smith, former AmeriCorps*VISTA, is a Recruiting Specialist with Widener University’s Career Advising and Planning Services (CAPS) office. Utilizing both personal and professional experience, Stephanie will host a workshop designed to assist participants in transferring their community service experiences into a professional resume.

Brianne Tangney is the Executive Director of Champions of Caring (www.championsofcaring.org). a not-for-profit organization that has educated and empowered over 10,000 youth in the greater Philadelphia area and South Africa to become social activists. Champions of Caring creates cultures of caring in schools and communities and teaches young people the skills to become active, engaged citizens. Brianne has over six years of experience as a program coordinator and administrator for character education, service-learning and workreadiness programs throughout Philadelphia. Brianne holds a master’s degree in Education, Culture and Society from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Religion from Trinity College in Hartford, CT.
