Keynote Speaker: Anne Mahlum, Back on My Feet
Anne M. Mahlum is the Founder and President of Back on My Feet (BOMF), a strategic and unique nonprofit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of the homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. In just two years, the organization has grown to 180 members and 750 volunteers in Philadelphia and Baltimore. BOMF will launch its next chapter in Washington, DC in March 2010 along with two additional cities in 2010. BOMF has been profiled extensively in local and national media, including ABC World News, Runner’s World and NBC Nightly News. In November of 2008, Mahlum was named one of CNN’s Top 10 Heroes of the Year for the creation and sustainability of Back on My Feet. Mahlum has received numerous awards for her innovative and effective efforts to help the homeless, but also for her ability to stimulate social change by bringing together all different walks of people. She was chosen as one of Philadelphia’s 101 Young Connectors by Leadership Philadelphia and Citizen of the Year for 2009 by Penjerdal. Mahlum has also received awards from Philadelphia and Pennsylvania public officials as well as from the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia 76ers.
In just two years, Mahlum has raised more than $1.5 million for BOMF, including in-kind donations of goods and services. To generate revenue for the organization, Mahlum created the Philadelphia region’s only 24-hour running event that attracted 1,000 people in its first year. The 20in24 Relay Challenge, Lone Ranger Ultra Marathon, Midnight Madness Run and Pajama Loop has major corporate sponsors such as Nike, Beneficial Bank, Stroehmann’s and Aquafina. In 2010, the event is expected to net more than $250,000 for the organization and have an impressive economic impact on the city of Philadelphia.
Mahlum also has her own marketing and communications firm, Anne Mahlum Communications, LLC. She provides a range of services including, strategic planning, social marketing, branding, media relations and website development. Prior to starting her own business and nonprofit, Mahlum spent two years as the Director of Outreach and Marketing for the Committee of Seventy, Philadelphia’s premier political watchdog organization.
Mahlum attended graduate school at American University in D.C where she obtained her master’s degree in political communications in 2003. She is originally from Bismarck, North Dakota. She is an avid runner and has completed nine marathons on six different continents. It’s her goal to run a marathon on every continent.
