For the record: Quoth the Raven, “Happy 200th Birthday!”

January 19, 2009 marked the bicentennial of the birth of poet and author Edgar Allan Poe. But it’s no fun to be creepy in the dead of winter, so Philadelphia waited until the appropriate time to celebrate the Father of the Macabre.

All during the month of October, there will be special events commemorating the life and death of one of the country’s most famous writers.

Poe-mania started appearing in September where Edgar Allan Poe Comes Alive! and Poe-sers held their own in the Philly Fringe Festival.

Beginning tonight, Haunted Poe will be turning a South Philly warehouse into a half theatrical production, half haunted house. Brat Productions will be performing scenes from some of Poe’s most famous works, but making them spookier (if that’s even possible). Opening weekend is selling at a special price of $15 (the norm is $25), so try and make it out if you can; the haunted house run ends Nov. 1.

The Third International Poe Conference will meet in Philadelphia from Oct. 8-11, and, as always, Poe’s place of residence at Seventh and Spring Garden will be open daily for tours. On Oct. 29, a special re-enactment of Poe’s classic “The Cask of Amontillado” will take place at the house and feature the villainous Montresor and his victim Fortunato.

For more information on the Poe festivities, visit the National Park Service’s website.

And for the record, Baltimore and Boston, I really think we win.
