For the record: Early Birds and Bookworms

It’s hard to believe, but in two days it will be August. For most college students, that means less than a month until the school year starts up again. It’s painful and no one wants to think about it. But when it comes to buying books for the semester, looking outside your school’s bookstore with a couple weeks to spare is the cheapest and best solution.

Check into your school student unions to see if any book swaps are going on during the beginning of the school year. Also, ask around to see if friends have taken the class before you and still have their books.

Useful sites like Amazon and Half.com usually have exactly what you’re looking for; even with the shipping costs, the price usually ends up being lower than a school bookstore.

Buying used books also helps you lead a green and charitable lifestyle. For every textbook you rent from Chegg.com, the company plants a tree and shipping back the books is free. Betterworldbooks.com also offers free shipping on all textbooks in the U.S., while a percentage of all textbook purchases goes to fund global literacy initiatives like Books for Africa.

If you’re relying on the mail, make sure to order NOW so that your books are shipped in time for the first day of class. You don’t want to have to shell out money you don’t have for overnight or last minute shipping.

However, if you’re that stubborn student who insists on waiting until you get the syllabus, never fear—many school bookstores sell used books for a reduced price. But they go fast, so you should still start your scavenging early. Happy hunting!
