For the record: The Man in the Mirror
The month of June has been particularly cruel to the entertainment world. We lost the original sidekick, Ed McMahon who helped so many stars get their start, and the gorgeous and strong Farrah Fawcett, who is now not only Charlie’s angel.
Two of our Philly family also passed—the revered voice of WWDB, Irv Homer and the beloved Channel 6 sports anchor Gary Papa. But nothing can compare to the heartbreak felt around the world when pop legend Michael Jackson died on June 25.
From his start with his brothers in the Jackson Five to his iconic dance moves as a solo artist, Michael has always been a show-stopper. Last Thursday was no different. Minutes after the news broke, houses erupted with "ABC" and "Billie Jean" and streets were filled with cars playing "Beat It" and "I Want You Back."
My brothers and I grew up on Michael's music. Every Saturday night, our dad would bust out Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad and we would have these really intense dance-offs. It's been years and I’m still no good at the “Thriller” dance…or the moonwalk.
While Michael's death was a painful shock, we can take comfort in knowing that as long as there are wedding receptions, cover bands and DJ Deejay's Madonna Michael Prince dance parties, the talent and legacy of the King of Pop will never die.
On a happier note, be sure to check out all the events for the Sunoco Welcome America celebration this weekend on the Parkway and around Philly. Happy Fourth!
