For the record: Three Days of Peace, Love and Music
This weekend into the early part of next week marks the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, the infamous 1969 three-day-long music festival promoting peace and love in Bethel, New York.
Woodstock served as the pacifists’ answer to the Vietnam War and featured great acts like Joan Baez, The Who, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone and Joe Cocker, along with two of my personal favorite geniuses, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix; I still get chills when I listen and watch Hendrix perform “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The Woodstock legacy is a hard one to just file away in the history books. In the years since 1969, multiple revivals have taken place, the most controversial (and last to date) of which in 1999 where the festival ended in fire-engulfed riots, somewhat tainting the Woodstock name.
40 years later, modern artists are showing their appreciation in a variety of ways.
Last month, the Bristol Riverside Theatre presented “Woodstock at 40,” a stage production celebrating the music and the atmosphere of the festival.
On Aug. 28, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute will premiere Oscar winner Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, a film about Elliot Tiber, without whom Woodstock would have never existed.
And tomorrow, Aug. 14, VH1 will show Oscar winner Barbara Kopple’s documentary, “Woodstock: Now & Then” beginning at 9 p.m.
While an official 40th anniversary show didn’t quick make it to fruition, all across the country this weekend there are sure to be smaller versions of the 1969 classic popping up for a whole new generation to enjoy.
