For the record: Whoa! Time surely does fly!

Has a year gone by already? It seems as though just yesterday I was anxiously applying for a position here at Campus Philly. Today I find myself walking out the office, as a soon to be college graduate, and moving away to a foreign city.

Well… Washington DC is not really a foreign city… but if it is out of Philly it is quite foreign to me. Shocking I know to find myself leaving The City of Brotherly Love, but when opportunity strikes you have to run and take it. Just a week after graduation I will be taking on the position Executive Producer of the Intern Edition at National Public Radio.

Just because I have chosen to leave Philadelphia, does not mean my heart is not in Philly. I will always consider myself the South Jersey/Philly girl (or at least my accent will take care of it).

I thank all of you for this wonderful year and promise you that the next Editor-in-Chief legacy will not be an unfamiliar face and may come to a surprise as quite a recognizable one. My yearlong journey at Campus Philly is one I will never forget ☺

- Megan Pellegrino, Cabrini '09

Philadelphia Cares About Fairmount Park Day 2009
Saturday, May 16th

On May 16th, join Greater Philadelphia Cares, the Fairmount Park Commission, and more than 1000 volunteers for Philadelphia Cares About Fairmount Park Day. Over 40 projects will take place at locations throughout the city, from the Northeast to South Philadelphia - and everywhere in between. In just a few short hours, this rain-or-shine event will help keep Fairmount Park clean and green for generations to come. From Pennypack Park in the Northeast to Morris Park in West Philadelphia, volunteers will battle invasive weeds & vines, paint benches, plant trees and pick up trash, beautifying the public park spaces we all know and love so well.

Click here to register or email volunteer@gpcares.com for more information.

Philadelphia Reading Olympics

Calling all volunteers: Interested in education in Philadelphia? The Philadelphia Reading Olympics is looking for volunteers to act as moderators, scorekeepers, and guides at the Philadelphia Reading Olympics competitions in the beginning of May. The Reading Olympics engages fourth through eighth graders, from Philadelphia’s public, parochial, charter, independent schools and after school programs in a collaborative reading competition, with the competitions in May bring the teams together to answer questions about the books.

Getting children to read independently is one of the best ways to ensure their ability to read well. Statistics show that the quantity of independent reading is directly linked to vocabulary development and proficiency. If any questions, please contact Bonnie Stone at bstone@gpuac.org or 215-851-1982. If you would like a volunteer application, please email ian@campusphilly.org.
