“The voice of my childhood,” “Just the friendliest warm-hearted guy ever and I never even met him,” “The voice so comforting it put me to sleep as a child,” “Just legendary.”
On Monday, just minutes before 12:30 p.m., the well known, adored life and voice of Harry Kalas was turned upside down. Kalas was pronounced dead after collapsing in broadcast booth hours before the upcoming afternoon game. Kalas never got to call the Phillies vs. Nationals game on Monday.
Kalas will be loved and missed. He has a special imprint on all of our hearts. Calling the games for 39 years Kalas for many is the only recognizable voice associated with the Phillies.
A home run will never be the same without Kalas’ infamous “He’s outtaaaaaa here!”
- Megan Pellegrino, Cabrini '09

Philadelphia Reading Olympics
Calling all volunteers: Interested in education in Philadelphia? The Philadelphia Reading Olympics is looking for volunteers to act as moderators, scorekeepers, and guides at the Philadelphia Reading Olympics competitions in the beginning of May. The Reading Olympics engages fourth through eighth graders, from Philadelphia’s public, parochial, charter, independent schools and after school programs in a collaborative reading competition, with the competitions in May bring the teams together to answer questions about the books.
Getting children to read independently is one of the best ways to ensure their ability to read well. Statistics show that the quantity of independent reading is directly linked to vocabulary development and proficiency. If any questions, please contact Bonnie Stone at bstone@gpuac.org or 215-851-1982. If you would like a volunteer application, please email ian@campusphilly.org.
