FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

This is now: Student Identity Theft

Imagine that when you check your mail at your parents' house (a.k.a. your "permanent address"), you find a water bill addressed to you for thousands of dollars. Imagine that when you investigate, you find out that the bill is for a house that someone bought using your identity!!!!

This very scenario has just happened to one of Campus Philly's own. Personally, I have always brushed aside the threat of identity theft because I figured I had no assets or credit to steal. But it turns out that all crooks need are your name and address.

Try to prevent such a situation from happening to you by tearing up documents with your address and personal info; using credit or debit cards only at reputable establishments; and never giving out personal info in response to e-mails or pop-up messages online. I know that I have definitely filled out way too many forms about myself online—to sign up for newsletters, RSVP for events, qualify for free stuff, etc. No more! Being careful about giving T.M.I. is the easiest way to fight identity theft.
