FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

FOR THE RECORD: Fancies, String Bands and Comics! Oh My!

So instead of harping on the perfect New Year's resolution (as if such a thing existed), let's focus on the first major event of the new year—the Mummers Day Parade!

Now, if you're new to the whole thing, let me explain. Picture a large number of men and women, dressed in some of the most lavish and colorful costumes, with face paint and a great little dance known as the "Mummers' strut." Next, imagine the streets of Philadelphia bursting with people all trying to get a glimpse of the sight. It's an annual Philadelphia tradition that dates back to the early 1900s and we take it seriously. Really seriously.

If you've never witnessed a Mummer firsthand, I insist that you stop what you're doing and schedule it in your dayplanner. Forget lounging around the house for one day and instead, get some friends and family to tag along. It will be one of the many experiences during your college career that you won't forget.

Trust me.

- Brittany Sturges, Temple '08

MLK Day 2008:
A Day ON, Not A Day OFF

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day...Despite popular opinion, it's not just about no class and killer sales. It's about a man who never took a day off, and about living up to a legacy of caring for our communities.

So why not do something a little different this year? Campus Philly can show you how. www. campusphilly.org/mlkday
