FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

This is now: Tragedy in Virginia

On the morning of April 16, 2007, a senior Virginia Tech student massacred 32 students and professors on campus. CNN.com reports that many of the victims were "athletes, scholars, friends, mentors." The victims include an Appalachian service project volunteer, a Holocaust survivor, a basketball player, a top cerebral palsy researcher, a civil engineer, a teacher's assistant, and many more whose potential will not be realized. The story is unfathomable; however, response to it has been characteristically American. From the professors who gave their own lives saving their students, to the survivors who have banded together in solidarity, ordinary people have shown an extraordinary capacity of love and hope.

If you would like to express sympathy and support, many local campuses have been organizing vigils and prayer services. Check your school's website for information. Campus Philly will report next week on local students' reactions to the tragedy.
