2 Cool 4 School: Food for Thought-Groceries in the city

You can’t call yourself a starving college student anymore. Last week, Campus Philly brought you the 2006 Food Guide to introduce you to some of the city’s great restaurants. This week, I’m going to share with you some of my favorite grocery stores in Center City so you can cook for yourself if going out to eat regularly isn’t in your budget. For the hipster/trust-fund crowd, Whole Foods (2001 Pennsylvania Ave., 9th & South) is an enormous haven of non-processed, organic foods. Your tree bark cereal and vegan TV dinners will leave you feeling good and healthy, but your wallet will be much lighter. For the poor hippie/non-conformist crowd, almost everything at Trader Joe’s (22nd and Market) is cheap and good—like the ready-to-go sandwiches near the entrance. Then there’s Super Fresh (10th & South, 5th & Pine) for traditionalists. You’ll find your trusted brands here at reasonable prices. Great Scot’s Rittenhouse Market (18th and Spruce). This seemingly tiny place is packed with both New Age-y organic foods that you can’t find anywhere else, along with old-school sugary favorites like Froot Loops. It’s not exactly cheap but I highly recommend it for the can’t-live-without-preservatives-but-wants-to-try-new-food crowd. Happy shopping!

NEW FROM CAMPUS PHILLY

FOOD GUIDE! CP Writers profile some excellent restaurants in the city.

Read about those great little restaurants that are nestled away in the nooks and crannies of Philadelphia.

They're everywhere and there are good ones and bad ones. See which chain restaurants are worth your money.

Candles, a warm ambience and soothing music...that's what you want for the ideal romantic restaurants. Check them out.

You're with a big crowd of hungry people. What places are great for a big group of ravenous college kids?

Uh-oh...the 'rents are visiting and for some reason they're not pining for cafeteria food. Where to go??
