In 2009, Campus Philly will host its second Alternative Spring Break. Instead of spending tons of money on airfare, hotels, and tacky souvenirs, why not stay in the place you know and love and help your own community?

We’re teaming up with four great non-profits to create four day-long projects, which each will have an active service and an educational component, for a totally hands-on and minds-on experience, with a reflective retreat to close the week. During this retreat, we will review each of the projects and issues discussed throughout the week, in addition to some personal development activities and professional development advice. Of course, because it is your break, exclusive discounts will help you to indulge in some of Philly’s fun side during your week of service.

Stay here and serve your city.

The due date for the first week (March 1st-6th) is now a soft deadline; All applications in by the 11th will be evaluated and accepted, and all applications in after that date until February 18th will be evaluated and accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The due date for March 8th-13th is February 11th.

Art Sphere - Campus Philly is excited to partner with Art Sphere for a second year for a project at the Fishtown Rec Center. ASBers will repaint a mural, work with stencil painting, clean up the park, and beautify the recreation center with the possibility working with a group of local elementary school students.

Education Works - Education Works is also working with Campus Philly for the second year, and this year's project will be at the Germantown Beacon Center. Beacon Centers are designed to rebuild communities of support and improved academic success for children, youth and their families in urban neighborhoods, and ASB participants will learn about education issues in Philadelphia as well as work with local students.

PHS - PHS views greening as an integral way to bring urban neighbors together and create a higher quality of life throughout the city. Its Philadelphia Green program organizes residents and local groups to maintain parks, plant and maintain tree-lined streets, and transform vacant lots into community gardens and open spaces. Volunteers will work on a community garden in Philadelphia and learn about the importance of urban greening to the environment as well as to the neighborhood.

MANNA - MANNA delivers care and hope by nourishing people at acute nutritional risk from a life-threatening illness. Offering opportunities for caring people to provide loving support to families, friends, and neighbors, MANNA enables local families and individuals to be more independent as they learn to cope with a serious illness.

Volunteers will work in MANNA’s kitchen in downtown Philadelphia to help prepare food, as well as learning about MANNA’s mission, organization, and approach towards helping people in need.

More activities will be coming as details are confirmed.
