Dancing Without Borders
by Erica Graham, Villanova '10

This past Thursday, Feb. 4, Philadelphians danced for a cause at the "Dancing Without Borders" benefit for Haiti.

Rated the #1 DJ event of last week by City Paper, this ultimate dance party lived up to its expectations, raising around $750 for the emergency relief services being provided by the Doctors Without Borders organization in Haiti.

The event, organized by Villanova senior Adam Scavette, and 1619 House owner Alan Dodd, took place in Fishtown at The Barbary, the popular club owned by local DJ Jhn Rdn. For a donation of only $5, dancers enjoyed discounted refreshments and non-stop music entertainment until 2 a.m.

The line-up included a number and DJs and live acts, all local and all eager to play their music for a good cause. DJ Rx, who is celebrating the release of his new EP, New Year’s Day, opened the night with a mixture of dubstep and electro, followed by the dance music of Djs Eggman, SiYoung & KurtLife, Social Studies, Ruinit and finally Flufftronix.

Live performances alternated between DJ sets and included a wide mix of musicians such as the up-and-coming rock band from South Jersey, Banned Books, the ever-so-sassy hip-hop duo Sgt. Sass and Chang Chang, who brought a new definition to the title of “rapper.”

While dancing to this very eclectic mash of music, party-goers were mesmerized by the flashy hula hoop and fan dancing of Funtown performers Rachelle and Jen Web.

Photographing the event was Phrequency’s Matt LaRoche, whose photos truly captured the fun and energy of the night and can be viewed at the Phrequency Blog.

The event was an overall success. The turn-out was great which shows that the music-loving crowd of the city really knows how to put their dancing to good use. "Dancing Without Borders," along with the other Haiti benefits going on all around Philadelphia have raised thousands of dollars in an effort to help out our neighbors in need.

Keep up the good work Philly!
