It’s my favorite day of the week—new music Tuesday!
Today, the ever eclectic and snappy Love In October released their new self-titled EP, the third record of their career. This follow-up to their 2008 full-length—Pontus, the Devil, and Me—is a mix of dance, pop, indie and rock with an instrumental twist.
The band was started in 2006 by Swedish brothers Erik and Kent Widman and found its way to completion through time in Minneapolis and Chicago. This has to be the most international band I’ve ever listened to (in addition to Sweden, the members hail from Canada, India and Mexico) and it happily shows in their music style.
The frenzied opener, “Kära Gud, Ge Mig en Själ” (“Dear God, Give Me a Soul”), took me by surprise. The instrumental chaos represented on the track is what has sadly been missing from the music scene of late. Love In October is to be congratulated. This band has found a way to create a hybrid sound out of the likes of Portugal. The Man and Arctic Monkeys.
Songs like “Hey!!!” and “Like Nothing Ever Happened” progress with catchy flare. And I adored the great presence of Widman’s bass on “Dance Johannes Kepler”—hands down, my favorite song of the seven. It’s very evocative of Interpol’s “Evil.”
Overall, I found this EP to be quite engaging. “Soft Errors” was the perfect way to transition from the intro track to the rest of the EP and final track, “27-08-08” (or August 27, 2008) makes you wonder what really happened on that day.
The band self-produced and recorded this third disc, a move that is truly indie and very much appreciated by DIY enthusiasts like myself.
Two weeks after the release of their EP, Love In October will be playing in Philly at Doc Watson’s. Check out the Campus Philly calendar for all the details.
